Nurturing curiosity: the quiet secret to a richer life

(a letter to every young woman)

There’s one piece of advice I’d love to whisper to every young woman, like a big sister who truly wants the best for you: stay curious. It might be the quietest habit of all, and yet the most powerful one for building a life that feels like yours.

Curiosity isn’t a luxury reserved for the “brainy” ones. It’s a muscle. The more you train it, the more doors it opens — in your studies, your friendships, your work, and the way you come to know yourself. And the good news? You can grow it at any age.

Curiosity is the fuel for discovery

Nurturing curiosity daily: the simple act of writing to explore the world.

When you’re curious, you ask questions, you explore, you step out of your comfort zone. Your brain loves this: a landmark study from the University of California, Davis, published in the journal Neuron, found that when you’re genuinely curious about an answer, you’re around 30% more likely to remember it — an effect linked to the release of dopamine and the activation of the hippocampus. Curiosity literally puts the brain in a state that’s primed for learning.

We remember far better the things that genuinely intrigue us — and even unrelated information sticks more easily when we’re in that curious state.

In other words: you don’t learn fast because you’re “gifted” — you often learn fast because the subject sparks your curiosity. Look for what lights you up.

Small exercise: this week, note three things that sparked your curiosity — an unfamiliar word, a job, a culture. Pick one and dig into it for 15 minutes.

See the world with wonder

Curiosity invites you to take nothing for granted. Every moment becomes a chance to learn: the arts, nature, science, the people you meet. A conversation with someone very different from you can teach you more than a long lecture.

Wonder isn’t naïve — it’s a form of intelligence. It keeps you alive, attentive, present.

Dare to ask questions (even the “silly” ones)

Never be ashamed to ask a question, even one that feels simple. Questions are the foundation of knowledge. The ones who dare to ask “why?” and “how?” are the ones who understand fastest — not the ones who pretend to already know.

A question asked is one more step towards understanding, and often the beginning of a lovely conversation.

Small exercise: next time you hold back from asking, ask anyway. Notice what happens — almost always, people are glad to answer.

Let curiosity make you stronger

Travelling, joining a club, taking a course, reading a book: every new thing widens your horizons. And there’s one benefit we often forget — curiosity makes you more resilient. Faced with a difficulty, a curious person looks for solutions, considers other angles, sharpens their critical thinking. That ability to adapt will serve you your whole life, in the easy moments and the hard ones alike.

Curiosity is also tied to wellbeing: curious people report more positive emotions, less anxiety, greater life satisfaction — and better outcomes at school and at work. That’s no coincidence.

Become an explorer, not a spectator

Don’t just watch your life go by — become its explorer. Every question, every experience, every bit of knowledge brings you closer to your full potential. The world is vast and full of wonders that are waiting just for you.

You have the power to shape your own path. So open your eyes wide, ask your questions, explore relentlessly — and never let fear or doubt hold you back.

I believe in you. Dream big, follow your curiosity, and move forward with courage.

With all my love, Your big sister
